Quinton Brock - Touch

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

Written during a lonely night in lockdown, Quinton Brock sings about the tension of getting out and meeting people after such a long time spent in isolation in his single "Touch". There is a tension in his lyrics mirrored by a rolling drum beat and sharp guitar chords, giving the feeling of your body spiralling with nerves. His vocals, however, bring a gentle optimism, lying softly over the chaotic instrumental and emulating the feeling of trying to keep a level head despite your body's nerves.

His recently released album "My Shadow" might at a first-listen sound like it's outside of any particular genre, lying somewhere between indie-rock/post-punk/surf-rock, however, Quinton Brock is very clear that he is making rock music, with his mantra "We're changing rock music forever".

The Brooklyn-based aritst wants to reclaim rock music back into black culture - it's been erased as a black genre in music history, and the black pioneers of rock music have been overlooked and underappreciated for their revolutionary impact on the genre. An important influence has been Sister Rosetta Tharpe - "The Godmother of Rock & Roll". An incredible singer and guiatrist who trailblazed rock music in the 1930s and 40s - her impact on the genre is so widespread, yet she remains largely unknown today.

Quinton Brock wants to bring this music back into black culture, to a point where its just as big as hiphop, and kids can feel like they're allowed to experience and enjoy it. There is a movement among black rock music, and Quinton names aritsts such as DE'WAYNE, Meet Me @ The Altar, and WILLOW as being a part of this.

Part of the accessibility of his music is how it doesn't need to be perfect. Although Quinton is undoubtedly hugely talented, he doesn't mind when things sound unpolished - it's part of the sound. For him, the music is all about the feeling it creates.
